When it comes to portable fridges, ICECO has always been one of the go-tos. I personally have two different sizes that I use on my camping trips. Both of mine come from the ICECO APL collection. I have the APL35 (37qt) and the APL20 (21qt). The APL collection features a rugged aluminum build available in either shiny bare aluminum or a clean flat black finish.
These fridges are extremely well-built, app-controlled, CarPlay-friendly, and surprisingly efficient. They both have their benefits and depending on what size you choose it might depend on what type of camper you are.
After using both in real-world scenarios, here’s my honest breakdown.
Main Differences: Size & Zones
APL35 (37qt) - Dual Zone
- Two separate zones
- Can run fridge + freezer at the same time
- Larger storage capacity
- Slightly higher power draw due to its dual-zone system
APL20 (21qt) - Single Zone
- One compartment
- Can be set as either a fridge or freezer
- Compact, lightweight, and extremely efficient
- Easier to fit in smaller vehicles or tight builds
If you want the ability to keep frozen food and cold food on the same trip, APL35 has a huge advantage. But if you want something light, ultra-efficient, and flexible, the APL20 wins.
Real-World Performance: My Personal Experience
⚡Power Consumption
This is a main factor when choosing your unit.
APL20 Efficiency:
I ran the APL20 off my 1056wh battery bank for an entire week, and when I checked it, I still had 35% battery left. It sips power - perfect for long overland trips, low-draw setups, or if you park in the shade and don't want to rely on solar.
APL35 Efficiency:
With the APL35, using one side as a freezer and the other as a fridge, I typically get around three days before my battery bank is nearly drained. It's not inefficient - it's just working harder to maintain two zones, especially one at freezing temps.
📱 App Control + CarPlay
Both fridges offer:
- App connectivity
- ECO mode
- Temp control + monitoring from your phone
- CarPlay support, which is honestly one of the coolest features ICECO offers.
Being able to glance at temps while driving without digging for my phone is underrated.
🧊 Storage & Convenience
- The APL35 shines for weekend camping, road trips, and situations where I want frozen food, ice packs, steaks, or prepped meals ready to go.
- The APL20 is small - but in a useful way. It's easy to pack, quick to access, and doesn't take up the whole cargo area.

Which One Should You Buy?
For Weekend Warriors = APL35
If you're camping Friday - Sunday, hitting the trails, or doing trips where you want convenience and versatility, the APL35 is the move.
- Fridge+freezer capability
- More storage
- Not needing to bring a cooler or ice at all
- Less planning overall
It's my personal pick for most trips.
For Long-Term Campers = Two APL20s or an APL55
If you're out for a week or more:
- Two APL20s give you a dedicated fridge and a dedicated freezer with ultra-low battery usage.
- Or, if you want one large unit, step up to the APL55, which offers more capacity and longer-term practicality.
For extended off-grid stays, this setup easily beats running a single dual-zone fridge that pulls harder on your battery.

Final Thoughts
The entire ICECO APL line is built to last and designed for the real overlanders - not just display shelves. The aluminum construction, smart tech features, and efficient compressors make them some of my favorite pieces of camping gear.
My recommendation:
-
APL35 if you're a weekender or want fridge + freezer in one box
- APL20 (or two of them) if you camp for long stretches and prioritize efficiency
- APL55 if you want the best of both worlds in one bigger unit
No matter which you choose, ICECO nailed the balance of durability, modern tech, and practicality.
